Nature reserves (zapovedniks) in the Volga catchment: protection, research and management

Abstract In the Russian Federation, protection category “Zapovednik” represents a strictly protected area, where access is restricted and aim to keep area “ forever wild ”. We provide an overview about organization of these nature reserves highlight their contribution fundamental research. Aquatic ecosystems in zapovedniks pristine sites great importance for long-term monitoring research, which fosters process understanding regarding interannual variability development aquatic coenosis. present long term research project abiotic biotic parameters Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve. Examples from Privolzhskaya Lesostep Reserve include invasive fish as well analyses influence beavers on fish.
